About Us

About the Director

Dr. McDaniel began teaching at Huntington in 1990 with 52 students. Since that time the HMS Bands have grown to over 250 students musicians divided across three ability levels and six sections. Dr. McD’s other secondary school experience includes building programs at Bassett USD, Rowland USD, and Palo Verdes USD. At each, the music programs more than doubled in enrollment while under his guidance. Finally, Dr. McDaniel has taught courses in Music Technology and Music History at California State University, Northridge and at the University of Southern California. In 2010 Dr. Mc Daniel was honored to be selected San Marino Unified District’s Teacher of the Year.

Dr. McDaniel received his DMA from the USC Thornton School of Music where his major area of emphasis dealt with the issues of integrating new technologies within the music classroom. In addition to a DMA in Music Education, Dr. McDaniel holds a Master of Music in Performance (Bass Trombone) from USC. His principal teachers include Jeff Reynolds (retired Principal Bass Trombone, LA Philharmonic) and Terry Cravens (LA Opera and Pasadena Symphony). Dr. Mc D’s performance credits include the Long Beach Ballet, Pacific Symphony, numerous local orchestras and big bands, as well as summer residences at the Round Top Festival (Texas) and AIMS (Graz, Austria).

When not working with the bands, Dr. McDaniel can be found in over his head restoring his historic 1912 Craftsman house, home to his two children and lovely wife.

Award Classifications:

Gold — Awarded to groups who were rated as having a superior performance.
Silver -- Awarded to groups who were rated as having an excellent performance.
Bronze -- Awarded to groups who were rated as having a good performance.

1st, 2nd, 3rd Place — Awarded to the top three groups in a given classification/age group. If there was only one group within a given classification present at the festival, no Place awards were presented in that classification that day.

Outstanding Band
Awarded to the highest scoring band at the festival, regardless of age group or classification.

Adjudicator’s Award
This award is given to bands with an average score (taken from 3 judges) of 92 or higher at a given festival. Heritage Festivals has a thirty year history with well over a million students performing at their events. Historically, the Adjudicator’s Award has been bestowed to only 10% of the groups who have performed nation wide at a Heritage event.

Instrumental Sweepstakes Presented to the school, regardless of division, with the highest combined score of its top two instrumental groups.

Festival Spirit Award
